Doing Original Work

All good things which exist are the fruits of originality.

We never think entirely alone: we think in company, in a vast collaboration; we work with the workers of the past and of the present. [In] the whole intellectual world… each one finds in those about him [or her] the initiation, help, verification, information, encouragement, that he [or she] needs.

All good universities in either the classical or the taught PhD models still demand that the thesis or dissertation should be novel research making some form of distinctive contribution to the development of knowledge in discipline.

All rules of study are summed up in this one: learn only in order to create.

Making a substantive contribution to the development of a discipline, which are still key criteria for awarding a doctorate in good universities. Acquiring authoring capabilities is very important in finishing a doctorate on time and avoiding the long delays for which PhD students were once notorious.

The most fundamental aspect of authoring is to manage readers’ expectations successfully, ensuring that they see the text as coherent, well paced and organized, and delivering upon your promises in a credible way. And for new PhD students, a critical step in beginning to manage readers’ expectations is to define clearly the intended overall thrust of their thesis – its central research question.

Even in the most traditional view of PhD education, which still stresses one-to-one induction of each student by a single supervisor, the transmission of authoring skills is vulnerable.

Here is where this book aims to be useful, in helping PhD students and their advisers to think more systematically about authoring skills. On the basis of supervising my own students over the years, and of teaching a large and intensive course on PhD drafting and writing at my university for more than a decade, I take what might be labelled an ‘extreme’ view by more conventional colleagues. I believe that in most of the social sciences and all of the humanities disciplines, a set of general authoring skills determine around 40 to 50 per cent of anyone’s success in completing a doctorate. Of course, your ability to complete doctoral-level work will be primarily conditioned by your own research ideas and ‘native’ originality, and your hard work, application and skill in acquiring specific knowledge of your discipline and competence in its methods. But unless you simultaneously grow and enhance your authoring abilities, there are strong risks that your ideas may not develop sufficiently far or fast enough to sustain you through to finishing your thesis at the right level and in a reasonable time.

Doing good research and becoming and effective author are not separate processes, but closely related aspects of intellectual development that need to work in parallel. I also believe that authoring skills are relatively generic ones, applicable in a broadly similar way across a range of disciplines at doctoral level. Hence this book draws on a wide range of previous writings and insights by earlier generations of university scholars.

What is the best profession (in 2009)

You are deciding on courses to take in universities. Your parents advised you to study professional courses. Okay then, but there are so many professional courses to choose from, accounting, law, dentistry, medicine, engineering, etc, etc. Which one is the best (currently) ?

I am going to give you the answer: dentistry.

If you are a doctor, you will also feel the pinch of the economic crisis because some not so well-doing patients are turning to government clinics and hospitals. But for dentists, they are still getting the business.

You might be amazed why is this happening. Those dentists should thank government policies for pushing the businesses to the private clinics. The government intends to increase public satisfaction towards dental clinics so they came out with a 30-minutes waiting time policy. Every patients need not wait for more than 30 minutes to see a dentist.

But the real life is some minor surgeries or tooth extractions might take about 30 –45 minutes or more than that. So what do the dentists in government clinics do is they will ask the patients to go home first and make an appointment (to avoid the patients from waiting too long in the clinic, complying to the 30-minutes policy). The appointment is usually after 3 or 4 months as the waiting list is long.

Imagine you are the patients- having toothache, and the dentist in government clinics asking you to go home and come back after 4 months! Crazy, you are already so painful and you can’t even chew your dinner!

You guess, what happens next? Most patients will head for private dental clinics to have their tooth extracted! They can’t stand for the pain for 3 or 4 months! That would be unbearable!

So, that’s the reason the private dentists are still getting businesses although the economic is bad. According to a reliable source, some dentists in KL are making millions per year. One friend of mine is making more than one thousand per week by working just part-time in private clinics (he is now doing his compulsory service in government clinic).

The conclusion is: Malaysians are getting more health conscious, they take care of their health, they eat well. But they still fail to pay attention to their teeth and they still go to the dentists and pay a handsome load of cash to them to have their dental problems fixed.

English as the medium of teaching Maths and Science

I strongly recommend all of you to have a read on this blog post by Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai, The Star chief editor.

If you want me to show my stand on this issue, I would say that I support the government’s move to teach Maths and Science in English instead of Malay or Mandarin. Wong Chun Wai has got his point, we Malaysians are particularly poor in English, and that hurt when we are trying to apply for positions in MNCs.

The fact is that most students prefer to answer the questions in English. That is a fact. The results have showed that the use of English has not affected their performances in these two subjects, again, that is a fact. English is a global language. It is also the language of the Internet.

          - Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai

Ya, English is the language of the Internet. See, I’m also writing this blog post in English. Anyway, I agree to Datuk Seri Wong that this should not be a political issue nor a racial one. This is something to do with our children’s education. To those Malay or Chinese extremist, studying Maths and Science in English doesn’t mean we forget our root. It does not mean we forgo our mother tongue. We MUST still learn our mother tongue but we have to admit that English is the global language and if our children do not master it, it is not going to do them any good in their future career.

Look at some of our national leaders, some of them do not have good command of English. When they attend international functions or conferences, how are they going to communicate with diplomats from all over the world?

University succumbed to public pressure

The disciplinary hearing for three students including Choo (朱国伟) which was supposed to be held today has been deferred indefinitely.

When asked about whether the university is going to withdraw the charges against the 3 students, no answer had been given.

If the University does not have the locus standi to charge the students, please just let go so that the 3 involved students can focus on their studies. How can you concentrate when you have to constantly fear that the university might want to charge you again?

Anyway, I am glad that not only UUM students societies have responded to this incidents, societies from UM, UKM, USM, UPM also showed their support towards the 3 students by gathering signatures and faxing those letters to UUM VC office. Also not forgetting support from NGOs and political parties.

Let’s hope that uum will drop the baseless accusation against the three students.
